Each Sponsor-A-Scholar student is nominated by school personnel. Students are selected based upon academic achievement, potential, school attendance, financial need (must be free or reduced lunch eligible) and strong desire to attend college.
Students elected to the SAS program participate in mandatory tutoring sessions in the state-of-the-art Troy High School Library (30 computers with Internet access/weekly staffed by seven Troy High School faculty covering Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Library Science), and are assigned a mentor. All students receive materials and preparation for the PSAT, PLAN,SAT and ACT examinations. All test fees and college level courses are paid for by the Sponsor-A-Scholar program. In addition, students participate in field trips to colleges where they have opportunities to learn about the college process and responsibilities of college life. Students have attended overnight programs at Skidmore College, Russell Sage College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union College and UAlbany as well as workshops at the College of Saint Rose and the Junior College of Albany. Students receive Career Counseling and participate in Career Interest Inventory through Guidance Direct.
Each participant is encouraged to explore careers and college majors via the Internet and work experiences. During the summer months students are placed in the Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment Program where they participate in employment/classroom experiences. Students have been employed by Troy City Hall; NYS; Hudson Valley Community College; St. Mary’s Hospital; YMCA; Junior Museum of Troy and the New York State Assembly. Several students have participated in rigorous academic summer programs at the Union College Summer Camp, Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute (Summer Math/Science Program and Dreyfuss Summer science Research Program) College Camp at Manhattan College and the Careeer Opportunities in Accounting Program at U Albany.
Upon successful completion of high school, students are eligible to receive a $6000 sponsorship ($1500 per year) to be disbursed over a four-year period for each successful year of college. The success of the SAS program is evident in our alumni:
