About the Universal Prekindergarten in the Troy City School District
The Prekindergarten program is funded through a grant from New York State. Part of the grant requires a collaboration with community-based organizations. At this time we currently are collaborating with six agencies. These include Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO), Sacred Heart School, Samaritan-Rensselaer Children’s Center, Sunnyside Day Care Center, Unity Sunshine, and Viking Child Care Center. The students within these agencies are a part of the Troy City School District Universal Pre K in collaboration with their programs. In recent school years we have been able to expand the number of classrooms and students.
Currently there are three classrooms within the district buildings (School 12 and School 14) which are operated by district staff. The remainder of the Universal Pre K classrooms that operate within the district buildings and outside agencies are staffed by the outside agencies. Before the 2006-2007 school year all but three classrooms were located in the outside agencies.
We now have 8 classrooms operating within the district elementary buildings. We have added two classrooms at School 2, one classroom at School 12 and two classrooms at School 14. We have also been able to expand many classrooms from a half day program to a full day. These additional classrooms in the district buildings are part of the Universal Prekindergarten but are also part of the CEO/Head Start collaboration. Each Universal Pre K teacher has a valid New York State teaching certification and experience with Early Childhood. The teachers are also encouraged to attend meetings and any professional development opportunities.
