COVID-19 Student Testing

January 8, 2021

Dear TCSD families:

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the region, we are preparing for the testing of students and staff that would be required if New York State designates any part of our school community as a Yellow, Orange or Red Zone.  In order to remain open, we will need to comply with the State’s testing requirements.

While the Troy City School District is NOT currently in one of these zones, we continue to work with the Rensselaer County Department of Health (DOH) and Questar III BOCES to ensure we are ready if this changes. This includes providing training to our licensed medical professionals, securing test kits from the State, and obtaining consent from parents parent for student testing.

About the test

The rapid tests we will use are the Abbott BinaxNow Antigen test, provided by the New York State Department of Health.  Our licensed or certified medical professionals will administer the tests, which involve a non-invasive cotton swab, similar to a Q-tip, swiping just inside the lowermost portion of the nostril.  These are not the deep-sinus swab tests that are conducted at medical facilities.  You can view the process in the video below:

The test results are available within 15 minutes.  Individual test results will only be shared with the family, testing personnel, Rensselaer County DOH and district administrators in the event that a result is positive and requires contact tracing.

The district will test a pool of individuals representative of all schools within the district. If a student or staff member tests positive, they will be required to follow the quarantine and isolation protocols provided by the Department of Health.

Parental consent

In order to comply with the testing requirements, we are required to obtain your consent to test your child(ren).  Please complete the required COVID-19 Testing Consent Form for each of your children to indicate whether or not we have your permission to test your child.  Completed consent forms must be received no later than Wednesday, January 13, 2021.  As a reminder, we are not currently in one of the State-designated zones, but need to be prepared in the event of such a designation.

Please note the following:

  • This form MUST be completed for all in-person and hybrid students regardless of your choice.
  • This form only applies to in-person or hybrid students.  Remote only students are not required to be tested.
  • Students and staff members will be randomly chosen for testing from a pool of individuals who have given consent.

Testing is not mandatory for students, however, if we do not receive consent from at least 20 percent of our school population, we would be forced to pivot to fully remote instruction for all students in Grades PK – 12.  This is obviously not something we want to be forced to do, so please consider giving your consent.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our school district. You can find more information by reviewing our COVID-19 Student Testing FAQ page. We will update you if and when we are required to begin testing.
