As part of Autism Awareness Month, students at School 16 participated in activities designed to build understanding, acceptance, and inclusion throughout the school community.
Teachers were invited to present a brief lesson on autism to their classes during April. The lessons were designed to help students better understand autism, recognize the importance of inclusion, and learn how they can support classmates with different communication and learning needs.
In addition, an interactive AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) display was available on April 29. With the help of an autism specialist, students learned how some of their peers with autism use tools such as iPads to help them communicate. They also studied how these tools help support communication and gained a better understanding of different ways people connect and express themselves.
These activities helped encourage meaningful conversations and continue building a welcoming and supportive environment for all students. Thank you to Special Education Teacher Ms. Houle and Speech Therapist Ms. Film for organizing the month’s activities!
