School 2 launched Black History Month with a thoughtful, schoolwide learning experience that began with STEAM Day activities on Jan. 30 and continued with a kickoff assembly held Feb. 2.

Last week, every classroom read My Very Favorite Book in the World by Malcolm Mitchell, which serves as School 2’s anchor text for the month of February. Students then participated in hands-on STEAM activities developed in collaboration with the district’s technology coaches. Each activity was connected to the book’s themes and designed to encourage creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression across science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

On February 2, students participated in the annual Black History Month Kickoff Assembly, where they learned about the purpose of Black History Month and explored the successes, struggles and contributions of Black and African American individuals who have helped shape American history. The presentation highlighted influential figures across history, leadership, science, the arts and literature, while reinforcing the idea that Black history is not only about the past, but also the present and the future.

Throughout the month, students will build on these experiences by exploring poetry by Black poets and writing their own poems centered on themes of self-love, school pride and community connection.

By pairing STEAM learning with a meaningful kickoff assembly, School 2 created a strong foundation for Black History Month that highlights literacy, creativity and student voice.
