Thanks to the Stewart’s Holiday Match program, the Troy Middle School library is launching a creative new literacy initiative: The Audiobook Cafe.
TMS Librarian Jen Mitchell developed the program to expand access to audiobooks and offer students a fresh way to experience stories.
“I have a deep love of reading in all its forms, and I think audiobooks are generally underrepresented in libraries,” Mitchell said. “My goal was to create a section of the library that makes this type of book accessible to our school’s population. As for the cafe aspect, what better way to enjoy a performance than with snacks?”
Using the grant funds, Mitchell purchased a set of Playaways (portable MP3 audiobook players) for student use and is planning a kickoff event for the fall. During library orientations in September, students will be able to enter a raffle to attend the event. Ten students per grade level will be selected to come to the library during lunch, enjoy a snack, and listen to part of an audiobook together in a cozy cafe-style setting.
Playaway devices offer access to a catalog of more than 30,000 titles. According to the company’s website, 70% of students say they read more after listening to audiobooks. The International Listening Association also reports that we learn up to 85% of what we know by listening.
Mitchell believes audiobooks are a powerful way to connect all types of readers with literature.
“For students who don’t particularly like traditional reading, audiobooks provide another way to enjoy fantastic stories. And for those who do, it’s a more connected and immersive experience.”
The program aims to build excitement around reading and encourage students to explore books in new formats. After the kickoff event, students will be able to check out Playaways or browse the newly created audiobook section in the library. Mitchell hopes having audiobooks available will increase student interest in books and expose them to a new format.
She also expressed her gratitude to Stewart’s Shops for their support.
“Finding funding for programming can be tricky as an educator. I’m deeply appreciative to Stewart’s for providing the means to make the Audiobook Cafe a reality.”
