With a 6-5 Troy (#8) win over South Glens Falls (#9) in a penalty kick shootout, the Flying Horses advance to the Quarterfinal match against #1 seed Columbia on the road Friday afternoon (10/25) at 2:00 p.m.
Game Recap from Coach Hines:
In a rematch from earlier this season, #9 South Glens Falls visited #8 Troy for a First Round Sectionals match.
From the first whistle, Troy looked to come out and set the tone, playing aggressive and taking it to the Bulldogs. This resulted in many early opportunities for Troy, but just like it has all season long, South High’s defense held strong and allowed their team to play their way into the match. From here, most of the match would be played in the midfield with both teams trying to create chances. Troy was able to find the back of the net in the 16th minute when a cross from Muhammed Hassan found Innocent Byiringiro, who took a touch before passing home the opening goal towards the far post. The first half would end 1-0 Troy. The second half saw both teams going at it and fighting for the win. Each team would have quality chances but the defenses on both sides were playing well and prevented any chance from resulting in a goal. Ten minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs would find the equalizer when a Finley Crossman set piece found the head of Anthony Cooper. Now back level, both teams raised their energy, looking for the winning goal of the match, but regulation would end with the score tied 1-1.
The two OT periods still could not decide a winner, and the game went into Penalty kicks. The shootout would see Troy advance after 7 PK takers. Both teams should be proud as they played their hearts out on the field. Congratulations to Troy for advancing to the Quarterfinals and to South Glens Falls for a great season.
