Imagine a prom designed just for you – several Troy teachers made this dream come true for their Life Skills students with a special Senior Send-off Dance.
Troy CSD hosted a special Senior Send-off Dance for students in the Life Skills classes at TMS and THS on Saturday, June 1st. This inclusive event, held in the Troy Room at Troy Middle School, provided a memorable prom-like experience tailored to the unique needs of these exceptional students.
The idea for the dance started in late January when a parent was worried her son would miss out on prom because of a medical condition. Realizing that no student should be excluded from such a significant milestone, THS Life Skills teacher Laura Borrelli collaborated with fellow educators Monica Staats (THS), Kellee Bonenfant (TMS), Dana Santiago (THS), Kelly Scofield (TMS) and Anna Schwartz (TMS) and Teaching Assistants Christine Cooney and Jessica Carhart to organize an event that would be accessible and enjoyable for all their students.
“Our students deserve a prom that they can attend and have fun just like their non-disabled peers,” said Bonenfant. “This event was a huge success because it was created specifically for students we love! Every detail, from the music and decorations to the food, was chosen with our students in mind.”
The dance had no strobe lights or loud music to ensure everyone was comfortable. Local businesses and community groups donated goods to help make the event possible, and the classes used some of the funds from their coffee cart sales to purchase decorations and other items for the dance. Special thanks go to Mallo’s, Bella Napoli, Chris’ Pizza, Regal Cinemas, Miranda’s Italian Imports, The ARC of Rensselaer County, The TMS Booster Club/PTO, the TCSD Special Education Department, National Junior Honor Society, and United Allies for their support in making this event possible. DJ Mr. Harbacz kept the dance floor lively with music that all students could enjoy.
Students danced the night away, enjoying a fun evening alongside their classmates. “We know each student left with happiness in their hearts,” said Bonenfant.
The success of this year’s dance has already made teachers excited for next year. They are planning to make it even bigger and better. The positive impact of this celebration will be remembered by students and staff for a long time.
“Our students had an amazing time and still bring up the event in class,” said Borrelli.” The positive impact it had on them is something that I will be so grateful for. They deserve the same experiences and opportunities as everyone else.”
