The Troy High School Drama Club will present Sister Act on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium located on the Troy Middle School/Troy High School campus at 1975 Burdett Avenue in Troy, NY. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
More than 50 students will recreate Sister Act from the hit 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg. This feel-good musical comedy includes original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors). It includes disco music and dancing.
When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the police are sure she won’t be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.
The part of Delores Van Cartier will be played by Troy High School senior Heavyn Francis. Mother Superior will be played by senior Mara Golden. Supporting actors include Meghan Bastidas, Olivia MacGregor, Kira Russell and Dahkim Kizer as Sister Mary Robert, Sister Mary Patrick, Sister Mary Lazarus and Curtis respectively.
The Spring Musical Performance is the culmination of four months of preparation including daily practices after school and weekly dance rehearsals with choreographer Marc de la Concha on Saturdays.
Director Tara Higgins-Pascucci said this year’s performance is quite different than last year’s production of Once on this Island in that there is more monologue and a great deal more set production. She said the audience can expect lots of laughter and good music.
“Each day the students continue to amaze me,” said Higgins-Pascucci. “We are seeing daily growth and resilience. We really do work them.”
“These students are dedicated and hard working and they’re here because they want to be,” said Musical Director Jason Boemio. “I expect viewers to be highly entertained and transported out of reality and into the story line.”
For the second year, the Troy High School Drama Club will be participating in the High School Musical Theater Awards at Proctor’s Theater in Schenectady on May 19.
“We were nominated last year for “Best Production” for Once on this Island, which sets the bar to go even further this year,” said Boemio. “We hope to be nominated again or even win!”
