Troy schools celebrate ‘Read Across America Day’

TROY, N.Y. – The Troy Central School District celebrated the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day, Friday morning. The day included guest readers and other Dr. Seuss themed literacy activities between School 16 and Carroll Hill School.

Included among the guest readers between the two schools were Troy Mayor Patrick Madden, Troy Police Chief Brian Owens, Rensselaer County Sheriff Pat Russo, Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly, New York State Assemblyman John McDonald III, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) President Andrew Pallotta and Carroll Hill School Principal Roy Stiles.

In addition to reading to the students, Mayor Madden issued a proclamation declaring March 1, 2019 as “Read Across America Day” in the City of Troy.

The full proclamation read:

WHEREAS, the City of Troy, New York stands firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students’ future academic success; and

WHEREAS, motivating children to read has significant impact on their academic achievements and growth, helping them develop essential vocabulary and language skills, with research showing that students who spend more time reading do better in school; and

WHEREAS, the City of Troy recognizes the importance of community involvement in the education of our youth, grounded in the principle that educational investment is key to the community’s well-being and overall quality of life; and

WHEREAS, “NEA’s Read Across America” is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for children across the United States to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of renowned children’s author Dr. Seuss; and

WHEREAS, this year, on Friday, March 1, schools across the Collar City will celebrate “Read Across America” which commemorates Dr. Seuss’s 115th birthday to promote reading and adult involvement in the education of our community’s students; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, I, Mayor Patrick Madden do hereby proclaim Friday, March 1, 2019, as “Read Across America Day’ in the City of Troy, and encourage all Trojans to recognize and promote activities which celebrate and encourages children to explore the joys of reading.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Troy, New York to be affixed this 1st day of March, 2019.

School 16 and Carroll Hill School celebrated author Dr. Seuss’s birthday as well as the fun and value of reading and literacy

School 16 students also enjoyed a breakfast of green eggs and ham with their parents and teachers.

Carroll Hill School students participated in a school-wide reading chain. Both schools also experienced an inspirational morning program with a Dr. Seuss theme including Dr. Seuss cartoons, book reading, and songs, and a 35-minute DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) session to end the day.

The reading motivation and awareness program calls for children across the United States to celebrate reading in commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The Troy Public Library also held several programs Saturday for Read Across America.
