Sportswriters around New York State weighed on the best high school football talents across the state and Section II was well represented in the committee’s All-State selections.
All-State rosters were released on Wednesday.
After winning the Class AA state title over Victor, the Troy Flying Horses were led by junior running back Joey Ward, who was a first-team offensive All-State selection among the largest schools in the state.
Ward was joined by senior quarterback John Germinerio and junior defensive back Joe Casale as second-team selections. Guilderland senior wide receiver Steven Fedorchak also received second-team honors.
Dev Holmes scored a pair of touchdowns in the Flying Horses’ 21-20 state title win over Victor, but also returned the opening kickoff of the Section II title game against Shaker for a touchdown, and followed it up with a touchdown reception on Troy’s first offensive play from scrimmage, propelling them to a 33-21 win.
For his efforts, Holmes was a fourth-team All-State selection at the all-purpose spot. Guilderland senior quarterback George Marinopolous and senior offensive lineman Andy Hines were also among the fourth-team roster. Saratoga Springs defensive lineman Kevin Toote, a junior, represented Section II on the defensive side of the fourth-team lineup.
Troy senior offensive lineman Saverio Yamin was a fifth-team All-State selection along with shifty Albany senior running back Ky’ere Tillery.
Holy Cross commit and Shenendehowa senior tight end Mike Pizziketti earned sixth-team honors along with Shaker senior offensive lineman Brandon Morrison.
Christian Brothers Academy senior defensive back Max Jones was a fourth-team pick and Brothers defensive lineman senior Brian Taylor earned a spot on the sixth-team.
Class A
In the conversation for the best Class A player in Section II, Amsterdam senior defensive back Dale Stanavich was a first-team defensive selection.
Mohonasen’s Ryan Deguire earned the all-purpose spot on the second-team roster, while Burnt Hills senior defensive lineman Jake Warren and senior linebacker Connor McClernan and Averill Park senior defensive back Ryan Wood were named second-team defensive standouts.
Burnt Hills junior Jake Stanko, who was named The Saratogian’s Section II Player of the Year, was a third-team selection as an all-purpose selection. Spartans senior kicker Connor McCormick was a fourth-team selection.
Lansingburgh junior wide receiver Eric Thompson III rounded out the area’s representatives as a fourth-team selection.
