Resources for Families

Letter from Superintendent John Carmello:

Dear Families,

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of two of our students, Shanise Myers of School 14 and Jeremiah “JJ” Myers of Troy Middle School. Our hearts are broken and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and loved ones during this terribly troubling time.

Because of the circumstances surrounding their death, information on this tragic event has become public and your child may have already heard about it. Young children can react to bad news in different ways, therefore, talking with your child is the best way to know how he or she is feeling.

Members of our crisis response team are available to meet with School 14 and Troy Middle School students individually and in groups next week when they return to school after the holiday recess.  Any conversations we may have with students will be addressed by our teachers and counselors in an age appropriate manner.

We are partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to offer grief counseling at Troy Middle School on Friday, December 29, beginning at 10 a.m..

The Troy City School District is a close and supportive community and the loss of two of our innocent and promising children is especially devastating. Please look out for each other and keep Shanise, JJ, and their family in your hearts and minds.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or your school’s office if you feel your child is in need of additional assistance.

Sincerely,

John Carmello
Superintendent
Troy City School District
