In a letter sent home to families on Friday, March 31, Superintendent John Carmello writes:

Dear Families,

On March 14, winter storm “Stella” forced the district to close for two days.  New York State Education law requires districts to provide no less than 180 days of instruction. To ensure we meet this requirement, we are amending the 2016-2017 district calendar as follows:

  • Friday, May 26, 2017 is now a half day*. This date was previously a teacher comp day with no school.
  • Friday, June 9, 2017 is now a half day*. This date was previously a regularly scheduled school day.

* Elementary dismissal at 10:20 a.m. Secondary dismissal at 11:40 a.m.

While the district is sensitive to the fact that some families may have plans to travel Friday, May 26 for Memorial Day weekend, we feel this is the least disruptive choice. The decision was made after weighing all possible options and factors, as well as consulting with our collective bargaining units.

We thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Please contact your child’s principal should you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

John Carmello
Superintendent of Schools
Troy City School District
